MWW Upgrades to New Servers - June 13th at 9:00 PM

All websites will be down overnight to speed up migration

In December of 2014, a little over a decade ago, Montague WebWorks upgraded to a super-fast dedicated server, that revolutionized our company and expanded our website hosting offerings. Due to that upgrade, we were able to go from about 100+ customers on a small, cramped server, to over 350+ customers on a giant, fast server, with room left to grow.

Well, it's time to do all that again!

The new server processor will be faster and the total RAM will increase, but the server's hard drive will get a massive speed and size bump, going from a 1.6 TB platter-based drive to a 10.5 TB Solid State Drive (SSD). That is nearly an 8x increase in storage, and likely a 10x or better read/write speed increase. Uploading files won't take as long, and we will have way more storage than ever before.

Some Questions and Answers

When will all this happen?

On the evening of Friday, June 13, at 9:00 PM, we will turn off all websites and begin moving all 350+ of them to the new server. This work could take up to twelve hours to complete.

This upgrade was supposed to happen in May but there were some unforeseen technical issues that prevented it from happening at that time.

Why will the websites be shut down for this server migration?

We take a full backup every night already, but it takes longer to do when the websites are up and running. Several hours. We want to turn this around as quickly as possible, so turning them off for an overnight server migration is what was decided.

Will there be any changes to my invoices?

No. There will be no fee increases associated with this server upgrade.

Will my website really be that much faster?

Page loads will become faster on your website, though because pages load pretty quick already, you may not notice a big difference there. Where you will notice the speed increase is when you are editing pages, specifically when uploading photos and images. That should become much faster for you.

What other improvements will there be?

What? You want more? Well, as you may have noticed we upgraded the photo editor on your website. Though there are still a couple quirks here and there, we feel this is a vast improvement over the old system, especially since you now have access to almost every image you've ever uploaded in the new Image File Manager. Go check it out!

We are very much looking forward to this upgrade, and apologize in advance for the inconvenience of your website being down during the migration. Good luck to us all in the days and months ahead!
